Emigrating to Australia: The Indian Movement

It’s fascinating to note that in the bustling world of Australian immigration, one in five temporary skilled worker visas granted in 2024-25 went to individuals from India.

That’s a grand total of 19,510 visas, making up a vibrant 20.7 per cent of the total. Isn’t that something? It seems Australians have developed quite an affinity for Indian talent.

Families in Tow

But wait, there’s more! Not only are Indian skilled workers making the leap, they’re also bringing their families along for the adventure. Out of the visas granted, 8,730 went to primary applicants, who are the men and women ready to roll up their sleeves and dive into the Australian job market.

Meanwhile, 10,780 secondary applicants—think spouses, partners, and dependent children—joined the fun. Picture this: families arriving in a new land, their hearts filled with hope and their suitcases bursting with spices.

A Surge in Skilled Workers

Now, here’s a fact to brighten your day: there’s been a staggering 52 per cent increase in the number of temporary skilled workers coming Down Under compared to last year, where only 12,810 skilled workers were granted visas.

Why this buzz, you may wonder? Australia is on the lookout for fresh talent in IT, healthcare, and engineering. The land of kangaroos is calling, and many are answering!

If we were to take a quick glance around the globe, the Philippines follows suit with 14,040 visas, while our mates from the United Kingdom are not far behind with 8,570. Isn’t it lovely to see such a melting pot of cultures?

The Student Scene

On the flip side, there’s been a little dip in student visa grants. In 2024, only 29,100 Indian students made their way to Australia—down from a hefty 44,889 in 2023.

The ups and downs of life, right? Yet, despite the decrease, India still boasts the largest number of student visa holders in Australia, with a whopping 102,093 students brightening up classrooms across the country. Talk about dedication!

At the same time, other countries like China, Nepal, the Philippines, and Vietnam are also contributing to this diverse student landscape. All up, as of December 31, 2024, there were 522,183 student visa holders, with Indians making up a significant portion, at 19.55 per cent.

A Rich Tapestry

So, whether you’re dreaming of sandy beaches, vibrant festivals, or a career brimming with potential, Australia welcomes those with open arms—especially from India! The experiences waiting for you are simply waiting to unfold.
