International students converge on Australia

International Students in Australia: What You Need to Know
Australia is becoming increasingly appealing to international students.
As of the end of 2024, a record 1.1 million international students were enrolled here, which is a boost of nearly 250,000 compared to before the pandemic.
More students mean more opportunities, especially for those considering a future in the Australian job market.
Graduate Visas Are on the Rise
Another promising trend is the increase in graduate visas. In the first quarter of 2025, the number of graduate visas rose to 222,200, more than double the figures from 2019.
These visas, particularly the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa, allow recent graduates to work in Australia after completing their studies, providing valuable work experience that can support a future application for permanent residency (PR).
Bridging visas also saw a significant rise, reaching 379,800. Many former students opt for these visas while waiting on visa decisions.
Current Trends in Higher Education
Australia’s competitiveness in higher education is notable. Research shows that Australia was the only major destination to see increased international student demand early in 2025. The country’s share of this demand rose by 8%, indicating strong interest in studying here.
Undergraduate vs. Postgraduate Enrolments
Undergraduate enrolments increased by 9%, with over 60% of institutions reporting growth. However, postgraduate enrolments fell by 13%, even though a slight majority of institutions noted increased interest. This could indicate various paths for international students, especially those keen on gaining practical work experience post-study.
The Future of Australian Migration Policies
The Australian government is focusing on quality over quantity in its migration policies.
Proposed reforms may include stricter English-language requirements for student visas and increased financial criteria. For those aiming for pathways to PR, these changes could shape how you approach your studies and job applications.
Implications for International Job Seekers
If you’re looking to work in Australia, understanding the changes in visa conditions and educational requirements can help you plan your move. The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), which affects how much you’ll need to earn to qualify for skilled migration, is set to increase above the median Australian salary, currently around AUD 95,000.
With an eye on the evolving landscape, staying informed can prevent potential roadblocks. For example, be mindful that only high-performing international graduates and postgraduate students will soon be able to bring family to Australia, which may affect your long-term plans.
