Australia Tightens Student Visa Rules, Indians Still Top Enrolments

The Changing Landscape for Indian Students in Australia
Australia has long been a popular destination for international students, particularly from India. But recent immigration policy changes have created some hurdles for applicants from specific regions, particularly students from states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Regional Restrictions on Student Visas
In early 2024, Federation University in Victoria announced it would temporarily stop processing student applications from certain Indian states due to a high rate of visa refusals. This decision represents a shift in how Australia manages its intake of overseas students.
Increased Visa Costs
On top of that, the Australian government raised the student visa application fee from AUD 710 to AUD 1,600 in July 2024. This increase has raised concerns about the affordability of studying abroad for many families. A significant rise in costs can be a major barrier for students looking to pursue their dreams in Australia.
Cap on International Student Enrolments
To further manage the number of international students and reduce strain on infrastructure, Australia set a cap of 270,000 enrolments for 2025. Public universities will receive 145,000 spots, while vocational training and non-university institutions share the remaining spots. This has led to a noticeable drop in Indian student visa applications by about 66.4% between July and August 2024.
Future Prospects for Students
Despite these challenges, India’s overall interest in Australian education remains robust. Students from regions not affected by visa restrictions continue to apply, indicating opportunities still exist. Many students are keen on courses that offer good post-study work options, helping them secure a pathway to permanent residency (PR) in Australia.
PR pathways like the 189 visa (for skilled workers) and the 190 visa (for nominated skilled workers) offer routes towards living and working in Australia long-term. The Skilled Migration program includes the 482 visa, which allows employers to sponsor overseas workers for skilled positions. Each option has different eligibility criteria, so it’s beneficial for potential candidates to research thoroughly.
Key Destinations for International Students
Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide are popular choices for Indian students. Melbourne, in particular, is loved for its cultural diversity and vibrant lifestyle, including fantastic food options—especially Indian cuisine. Adelaide has also seen an uptick in enrolments, thanks to government initiatives aimed at attracting students. Direct flight routes between India and Adelaide are set to further enhance this trend.
The Importance of International Students
International students play a crucial role in Australia’s economy, supporting jobs and university funding. A reduction in enrolments could have significant economic consequences. So, it’s vital that Australia strikes a balance in its approach to welcoming students while managing enrolment numbers.
Your Next Steps
For those still keen on studying in Australia, it’s advisable to apply to universities and vocational institutions that review applications on a case-by-case basis. Strong academic and financial records are essential, along with a solid Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement to demonstrate your intentions.
