Australian Indians Demand Jacinta Price's Direct Apology

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley Issues Apology

Leaders from the Indian Australian community have welcomed an apology from Opposition Leader Sussan Ley. Ley’s remarks followed controversial comments made by Jacinta Nampijinpa Price about Indian immigration, which had upset many in the community. Ley expressed her gratitude for the contributions of all migrant communities and apologised for the distress caused by Price’s statements.

Despite this, community leaders stress that a direct apology from Price is vital for rebuilding trust and reconciling relationships with Indian Australians.

Controversial Comments on Indian Immigration

Price previously stated that the Labor Party was prioritising Indian migrants for political gain. This statement was met with indignation from community members, particularly those on temporary visas like the 482 work visa or those pursuing Permanent Residency (PR). Many felt that the comments unfairly singled them out.

When asked about her remarks, Price admitted they were “clumsy” but did not issue a formal apology, leading to further frustration among those seeking jobs and long-term prospects in Australia.

Community Leaders Demand Accountability

Amar Singh, founder of Turbans 4 Australia, praised Ley’s apology but highlighted that it falls short without Price taking responsibility for her words. “A person has to be responsible for their own actions,” Singh remarked, emphasising the emotional toll on Indian Australians. He described the past week as particularly challenging, deeming the situation both hurtful and un-Australian.

Gurmeet Tuli, president of Little India Australia, echoed these sentiments, calling Price’s remarks “racial slurs” and insisting on a direct apology from her.

Political Fallout within the Liberal Party

In the wake of criticism, Sussan Ley removed Price from her role on the Opposition frontbench, citing her refusal to apologise and lack of support for party leadership as key reasons. Price later expressed regret over the clarity of her comments but maintained that her statements were misunderstood rather than intended to offend.

Broader Impact on Migration Discussions

Liberal Senator Jane Hume remarked that the situation was mishandled by all parties, calling it an “unedifying week” for the Coalition. This incident showcases the sensitivity surrounding discussions about migration in Australia, particularly for skilled workers and international students aspiring to settle here. For many considering moving to Australia, such debates can significantly influence their view of the country as a welcoming environment for work, study, and long-term residency.
