  • ACS Letter – Is this employment related to the nominated occupation?

Posted by Rohan on March 6, 2025 at 2:52 pm

    Hello everyone,

I recently received my skills assessment results from the Australian Computer Society (ACS), and I’m uncertain if the experience mentioned in the assessment letter qualifies as skilled employment for my migration application.

    Here’s what the letter states:

    Dear <NAME>,

We appreciate your migration skills assessment application, which we received on 08-Feb-2025.

Your skills have been evaluated and deemed suitable for the ANZSCO code 261313, which corresponds to Software Engineer, effective from 29-Nov-2021.

Completion of your Professional Year Program, along with the qualifications below, reflects an appropriate skill level.

The qualification assessed as relevant to ANZSCO code 261313 Software Engineer is:

Your <Bachelor of Something from Some University> awarded on 29-Nov-2021 has been recognized as equivalent to an AQF Bachelor Degree with a Major in Information and Communication Technology.

Your work experience, assessed as closely related to ANZSCO code 261313 Software Engineer, includes the following:

    Employment Dates: <start date>-2024 to <current date>-2025 (0 years 7 months)

    Employer: <Company Name>

    Job Title: <My Position>

    Location: Australia

My inquiry is: Should I answer “Yes” to the question “Is this employment related to the nominated occupation?” for <My Position>?

I have come across references to “Skill Level Requirement Met Date” and “skilled employment” in various resources, but the wording in my results letter doesn’t match exactly, so I’m seeking clarification!

G’day Rohan and welcome to Oz Visa Forum 😊

The key detail here is that your ACS assessment states your work experience is assessed as closely related to ANZSCO code 261313 Software Engineer.” This means ACS recognises it as relevant experience for your nominated occupation.

However, for points-tested visas (e.g., subclass 189, 190, or 491), only work experience completed after the “Skill Level Requirement Met Date” counts as skilled employment for migration points.

Your letter does not mention this date explicitly, but generally, it is the date you completed your AQF Bachelor Degree (29-Nov-2021) or your Professional Year (whichever is later).

Since your work experience (0 years 7 months) appears to have started in 2024, it is likely after your Skill Level Requirement Met Date.

If this is the case, you can answer “Yes” to the question “Is this employment related to the nominated occupation?” because ACS has confirmed it is closely related.

That said, this does not necessarily mean it will count for skilled employment points, that depends on whether it meets the minimum 12 months of post-qualification experience required.

If you are applying for General Skilled Migration (GSM), ensure that your work experience aligns with the points test criteria. If you’re unsure about your exact “Skill Level Requirement Met Date,” I recommend you request clarification from ACS.

Hope this helps! Feel free to let me know if you need further clarification.

    Regards,
    Mark
