How to Obtain TFN and Open a Bank Account?
Hi all. Thanks for making this platform available – very impressive!
I am currently in the process of setting up my bank account and obtaining my Tax File Number (TFN) to begin my job search in Australia. However, I’ve faced a few challenges along the way.
At the moment, getting a PO Box is not feasible for my budget, and I’m unsure about using my hostel address since I might move before any mail arrives.
My primary focus is to establish an Australian bank account, as I understand that it’s essential for employment. I am willing to temporarily pay higher taxes, as my main goal is to secure a job quickly.
Any guidance or advice on how to efficiently set up a bank account and obtain a TFN in Australia would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance
(Note: I’ve confirmed that my temporary accommodation can hold mail for up to a month, so there are no concerns there.)

1. Opening a Bank Account: You can open an Australian bank account as a temporary resident even before receiving a TFN. Most major banks (like Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ, and NAB) allow you to open an account online or in person using your passport and visa details. Here’s what to do:

Visit a bank branch with your passport and visa grant notice (a printed copy is fine).

Provide your hostel address as your mailing address. Since they can hold mail for a month, receiving your bank card and account details should be fine.

Ask if you can update your address later online or in the branch (most banks allow this easily).
2. Getting a Tax File Number (TFN): You can apply for a TFN online via the official Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website:

Select the option for foreign passport holders and follow the application steps.

You’ll need your passport, Australian address (use your hostel’s address), and valid visa.
Don’t worry about paying higher taxes for a few weeks if your TFN hasn’t arrived yet. Once it’s processed and linked to your employer, your tax will be adjusted automatically going forward.
