Introducing Myself
Posted by Thomas on January 23, 2025 at 10:17 amHi everyone. I’m Tommy.
I’m an American, 36 years old, and have been looking to migrate to Australia seriously for about 6 years.
I’m drawn to this website primarily for advice and assistance in getting past the EOI stage. I’m a Cyber security professional, decade plus work experience, an active skills assessment from the ICS as a Security Specialist, over 100 points in my EOIs…..and yet I’ve never once gotten any of my EOIs selected.
I can dive into more details about my experience in another forum, but for now, just wanted to give a brief intro. Looking forward to interacting with everyone.

Welcome, Tommy and thanks so much for the intro. 😊 100 points and no invite is crazy – Out of interest, when did you submit your EOI? You must (hopefully) be close to the front of the queue at least.🤷♂️

Hi Mark. My most recent EOIs were submitted in November of 2023. I submitted a 189, 190 and a 491. So about 14 months ago.
I previously submitted EOIs in 2019, but those were derailed by the pandemic and Australia’s closed borders for 2 years.
I’m of the opinion that my EOIs aren’t getting selected because I’m offshore(i.e. not physically in Australia). But would love to hear your opinions and thoughts on the matter as to why you think my EOIs aren’t getting picked

Hi mate – to begin with, EOI selections are driven by points score and submission date. Your location shouldn’t influence it.
So I did some digging around and found this data via the Skillselect dashboard report. It’s a horrible interface to navigate so I tend to avoid using it, but it sometimes gives some interesting insights.
What it shows is the number of people who have applied for the same occupation type.
As of December 2024, there were less than 73 EOIs submitted with 100 points awaiting invitations; there were <20 submissions awaiting invitations of 105 points. These invites will receive invitations before those with 100 points, even though you submitted your EOI first. In the last invitation round, there were applicants who received invites with 110 and 115 points, respectively.
Applicants applying under 189 visas seem to be getting invited with slightly lower scores
The key for the different status info.
- SUBMITTED EOI has been submitted, waiting for Invitation
- INVITED EOI has received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) visa, but visa has not been lodged
- LODGED EOI has received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) visa, and the visa has been lodged
- CLOSED EOI has been granted or rejected visa, or the EOI has expired (after 2 years)
- HOLD EOI has been put on HOLD by applicant (paused), to be resumed sometime in future (unpaused)
You can view the dashboard here. Start with the top left search option and type in security; this should bring up IT security specialist; then click the next option (top right of the screen) or navigate to sheet > Dashboard results table to view the results.
Perhaps have play. My takeaway is there are a LOT of EOIS against this occupation type, and every time someone comes in with more than 100 points, they will be placed in the queues ahead of you.
When calculating your points, did you do an IELTS test and if so, how many points did you claim?

Hi Mark.
This is great and amazing information. So I did a quick search, and I have 9 Submitted EOIs. I have 8 EOIs for each of the State/Territory Jurisdictions, and I selected both the 190 and 491 options for each of the 8 jurisdictions. All of my 491s have 100 points claimed, and all my 190s have 90 points claimed.
I have submitted a 189 as well, but I can’t find the EOI login credentials for that one…..will search soon to see my point total for that one. Regarding the IELTS, I didn’t take that one. I took the PTE and got the maximum point total, 90s on all areas. I claimed the max 20 points for it.

Thanks Thomas, and great that you included the English test score. A lot of folks from English speaking countries think they don’t need to even though there are significant potential points on the table if they don’t (which is why I was checking) 🙂
It genuinely sound like you have every avenue covered so it’s probably more of a waiting game for now.
I’d keep an eye on 482 Visa job opportunities in parallel in the interim but other than that. Fingers crossed for an invite very soon.

Thank you Mark. I also realized that this Feb 11th will be the 2 year mark of my PTE results, so I think I have to take that again to keep it active. I know EOIs expire in 2 years as well. Regarding skills assessments, my letter from the ACS says my results are good for 2 years, but I’ve heard that the Aussie government respects results for 3 years. Do you know if this is true?
Also, I found my 189 EOI login. My point total for that one is 85

Hello mate. Generally, if a skills assessment letter does not specify a validity period, it is considered valid for 3 years; however, if the assessment letter states a shorter validity period, like your ACS letter indicating 2 years, then that timeframe applies, meaning the Aussie government would only consider your results valid for 2 years in your case.
With that said. It looks like their has been a recent change.
According to the latest info here.
Delegates of the Minister will now accept a suitable skills assessment for an applicant’s nominated skilled occupation which has been obtained within the 60 day invitation period.
This change of approach is made as a result of the decision of [2021] FCCA 686). The Minister will administer the in accordance with the decision, but the Minister reserves the right to make submissions in a Court that was wrongly decided.
So theoretically, you could just wait for an invite and inbetween celebrating, retake your skills assessment.
Keep an eye on this however, personally I’d probably retake it sooner rather than later just to be sure, but that’s just me 🙂
