Introduction
Posted by Jenny on February 19, 2025 at 5:27 pmHi, I’m Jenny. I’m an Occupational Therapist currently in the UK. I’m using a migration agent and looking at the 491 route for NSW. Also considering the 186 option.

Nice work Jenny and welcome to our community. It’s great to have you here.🙂
How far along the migration path are you?
Also, I’m sure your agent will have most things covered off but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask at any time ☺️
This link here is a great spot for posting any questions you might have.
We look forward to getting to know you and helping where we can.
All the best
Mark

Hi Jenny, I am an OT too. I was also looking at securing a 186 visa and even though I was told that it would rarely happen, I got a couple of employment offers with the employer willing to sponsor directly on a 186 visa. However, the migration agent that the employer used reported that it was not possible since offshore OT’s can only get limited AHPRA registration and full registration is needed for a 186 (international OTs first have to undergo a 6 month supervision period). Only after that period has been completed may the OT apply for general registration. It was suggested that a 482 visa route had to be taken and after general registration is obtained the 186 visa can be secured.
Have you had information from your agent which contradicts this?

Hiya Christel, thanks heaps for providing some input here. Hopefully Jenny response and provides some clarity.
What I’d like to flag however is as of 22 December 2022, the Department of Home Affairs appears to now accepts Limited or Provisional registration from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for all AHPRA-regulated occupations, including Occupational Therapists, when applying for the subclass 186 visa.
This means that full (general) registration is no longer a mandatory requirement at the time of visa application.
I’d get the migration agent who flagged this to double check for the latest data. A couple of more official sources of this info (from legal types and other migration agents) here and here.
I hope this helps both of you.
Cheers
Mark
