Good day everyone from OZ Visa Forum🤗,

I’m heading 35 this year, from Malaysia and graduated in Civil engineering from Swinburne University of Technology, Malaysia. I had working experience in structural design and construction for 3 years. After this, I worked in the real estate negotiator industry for years. I’m thinking to get a vacancy in Australia, but I not sure which path or visa should I apply.

I’m an active graduate membership from Engineer Australia (EA) since 2024. I’m not sure whether I should get the sponsorship job first or to apply for the skill migration through EA or to apply the PR visa will be better?

Anyone here have the similar experience can share with me? Thousand appreciated. 🙏

    Regards,

    Wong

    Hey Wong,

Thanks for sharing your journey! While I may not personally be able to relate to your experiences, I’m more than happy to help guide you on your Australian visa options.

Since you have a Civil Engineering degree and work experience, you have a couple of potential pathways:

    1. Skilled Migration (PR Pathway) – Civil Engineer (ANZSCO 233211) is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), meaning you can apply for permanent visas like:

      • Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent Visa) – No sponsorship needed, points-based system.
      • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated Visa) – Requires state nomination.
      • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional Visa) – Requires regional state nomination but has a pathway to PR.

Since you’re already an Engineers Australia (EA) member, you’d likely need to complete a Skills Assessment with them if you haven’t already.

    2. Employer-Sponsored Visa – You can look for an employer to sponsor you under the Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage Visa). This is a great option if you secure a job offer first. You can find sponsored jobs at https://482jobs.com, a platform dedicated to visa-sponsored roles.

Your choice depends on your priorities really:

if you qualify for a PR visa through points, it could be a stronger long-term option, whereas a sponsored job could be a quicker way in but requires an employer willing to sponsor.

If you’re open to it, I’d suggest checking your points for PR eligibility (see here for an easy calculator) while simultaneously looking for sponsored roles.

Let me know if I can help you with regards to anything else.

    Regards,

    Mark
