Hi Frederick,
Thanks for reaching out, and welcome! Great to hear about your experience in mining—Australia has a strong demand for skilled tradespeople in this sector, especially in regional and mining areas.
To start your journey toward relocating to Australia, here’s a step-by-step outline tailored to your role as a Mechanical Technician:
-
Check Your Occupation Eligibility: Mechanical Engineering Technician is classified under ANZSCO 312512. This occupation is currently on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), which can lead to temporary and permanent visa pathways.
-
Skills Assessment: You’ll need a positive skills assessment to apply for skilled migration. For your occupation, the assessing authority is Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). You can find more details on their official site: https://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au
-
English Language Test You’ll need to take an approved English test, such as IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT. To meet most visa requirements, aim for at least a score of 6 in each band (IELTS equivalent).
-
Visa Pathways Since your occupation is on the MLTSSL, possible visa options include:
-
Subclass 189 Skilled Independent visa (permanent, points-tested)
-
Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa (permanent, requires state nomination)
-
Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa
-
Subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa (requires employer sponsorship)
-
-

Once you have your skills assessed and meet the other criteria, you can explore lodging an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect if you’re aiming for skilled migration, or apply directly for employer-sponsored visas if you secure a job offer.
I hope this gives you a solid starting point. As you proceed, feel free to ask more questions.
Best of luck with your plans to develop your career in Australia! 🦘😊
Warm regards,
Mark -
