  • S56 (189 Visa): What was the duration until your visa approval?

Posted by Simon on March 2, 2025 at 4:44 am

Hi everyone! I’m looking for insights on the timeline for a Subclass 189 visa application after receiving a Section 56 request.

Does anyone know how long it typically takes for a case officer to make a decision following a S56 notice?

I was issued a Section 56 request for proof of my relationship on January 31, 2025, and promptly submitted the necessary documentation by February 4, 2025, after being given a 28-day period to respond.

From what I understand, it seems that visa processing resumes only after the 28-day response window concludes.

I’ve seen reports from some applicants who received their permanent residency grants just one or two business days after the 28-day mark.

I’d greatly appreciate it if anyone could share their experiences regarding the timeframe after receiving a S56 notice and how long it took to secure their visa approval. Your input would really help! 🙂

    Thank you!

Here’s a brief overview of my application timeline:

    • Occupation: Architect
    • Point Score: 80
    • Expression of Interest (EOI) Submitted: September 7, 2022
    • Invitation to Apply (ITA) Received: September 5, 2024
    • 189 Visa Application Submitted: October 31, 2024
    • Section 56 Notice Issued: January 31, 2025
    • Documents Submitted in Response to S56: February 4, 2025

    Hi Simon,

Welcome to our community and thanks for sharing your timeline!

The processing time after responding to a Section 56 (S56) request can vary depending on the complexity of your case, the workload of the case officer, and the overall visa processing queue.

You’re correct that processing generally resumes after the full 28-day response window has passed, even if you submitted documents earlier.

Some applicants report receiving their visa grant within a few days after the 28-day mark, while others may wait weeks or even months.

Given that your 28-day period ended on February 28, 2025, you might see movement in early to mid-March. However, if additional verification is required, it could take longer.

If you don’t hear back within a few weeks, you might consider checking your ImmiAccount for updates or contacting the Department of Home Affairs for any status updates.

Would love to hear from others who have gone through a similar process!

Best of luck with your visa outcome!

    All the best

Mark, thank you very much. I’ll wait another week and will drop a note through to the migration department to see if I can get an update.

    Thanks for the detailed reply.
