• Seeking Help: Best Migration Pathway for Aged/Disabled Carer from India

Posted by MahdiMember - Located in India on July 21, 2025 at 1:44 pm

    Hello everyone,

My name is Mahdi. I am originally from Iraq and currently living in India as a registered refugee with UNHCR. I hold a Certificate in Elderly and Disabled Care from Alison, and I also have a Diploma in Teaching Arabic and Sciences. Additionally, I completed 1-year and 6-month Yoga Training Certificates from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in New Delhi.

I am highly interested in migrating to Australia and working in the aged care or disability support sector. I am also willing to study further in Australia if needed.

However, I am unsure which visa pathway suits me best. I have read about the Skilled Visa, Student Visa, and Humanitarian protection options. Can anyone kindly guide me on:

    • Which visa pathway is most realistic for someone in my situation?
    • Can I apply as an Aged or Disabled Carer under the Skilled Migration list?
    • Are there any recognized short courses in Australia that can help me qualify?

I would really appreciate any help, suggestions, or shared experiences.

    Thank you so much 🙏

    Mahdi

Hi Mahdi, thanks so much for your thoughtful post.

It’s great to hear about your passion for working in aged and disability care in Australia. Based on your background and current situation, here’s a breakdown of the most realistic migration pathways for you:

    1. Skilled Migration Pathway (Subclass 482 or 186)

The occupation Aged or Disabled Carer (ANZSCO 423111) is on the Regional Occupation List (ROL), which means it may be eligible under:

Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage visa) via an Australian employer in a regional area

Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) after gaining experience with a sponsoring employer

    • To be eligible, you usually need:
    • At least a relevant Certificate III or higher qualification in Individual Support or Aged Care from a recognised provider (Australian courses preferred)
    • Work experience in a similar role
    • English proficiency test (like IELTS)

Unfortunately, your current qualifications from Alison and yoga training are not recognised for this occupation under Australian standards.

You would need to complete a relevant course in Australia to meet the skills requirements.

    2. Student Visa (Subclass 500)

This may be the most realistic first step. You could apply for a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Disability, or Home and Community Care) through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Australia.

    Benefits of this path:

    • Gives you a recognised qualification
    • Offers work rights during study
    • May lead to employer sponsorship or a Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) if you meet further criteria

    3. Humanitarian or Protection Visa

This is highly complex. While you’re a UNHCR-registered refugee, Australia’s Humanitarian program prioritises referrals through UNHCR itself. You can explore this, but success rates are low unless referred directly by UNHCR.

    Next steps:

    • Consider studying a Certificate III in Individual Support in Australia
    • Search for schools and apply for a Student Visa (subclass 500)
    • Once qualified, seek work and potential visa sponsorship
