Hi Ronnie, and welcome to the Oz Visa Forum.
As a skilled electrician, you have several visa options for migrating to Australia. Here’s what you need to do:
Visa Options for Electricians
- Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) – A points-tested visa that does not require employer sponsorship. You need to be invited to apply after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI).
- Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) – Requires nomination by an Australian state or territory. Each state has different criteria for electricians.
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491) – Requires nomination by a state or sponsorship by an eligible family member in a regional area.
- Employer-Sponsored Visa (subclass 482 or 186) – If you secure a job offer, an Australian employer can sponsor you.
Steps to Apply1. Check ANZSCO Code & Skills Assessment
Electricians fall under ANZSCO 341111 (Electrician General), which is on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List). This means you qualify for skilled migration pathways.
Before applying for a visa, you must pass a skills assessment to prove your qualifications and experience meet Australian standards. The assessment for electricians is conducted by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) through a registered training organisation (RTO).
Here are some RTOs that can assess electricians:
- VETASSESS – http://www.vetassess.com.au
- Future Skills International – http://www.futureskillsinternational.com
- Victoria University – http://www.vu.edu.au
The process involves submitting documents, conducting technical interviews, and conducting a practical assessment.
2. English Language Test
You must take an English test (IELTS, PTE, or equivalent) to meet visa requirements. Minimum scores depend on the visa type.
3. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
For subclass 189, 190, or 491, you must submit an EOI through SkillSelect on the Department of Home Affairs website. You’ll be ranked on a points system based on age, skills, work experience, and English ability.
4. State Nomination (if applying for subclass 190 or 491)
If you choose a state-nominated visa, check each state’s requirements. Some Australian states have specific demands for electricians.
5. Job Search (for employer-sponsored visas)
If you prefer employer sponsorship (subclass 482 or 186), start looking for jobs that offer visa sponsorship:
- 482jobs.com – A dedicated site for visa-sponsored jobs.
- Seek
- Indeed
6. Apply for a Visa
Once you receive an invitation or sponsorship, you can apply for your visa through the Department of Home Affairs: http://www.homeaffairs.gov.au.
If you need help with specific steps like the skills assessment or job search, please let me know!
All the best
Mark

OK, so to apply for the independent visas (no sponsorship required), you will need a minimum of 65 points, Ronnie
With this in mind, I would focus on the Sponsored visa such as the 482 Visa. Note you will still need to have your skills assessed given the nature of your occupations (qualified electricians need to be licensed in Australia).
I hope this helps
