  • Social worker from Sweden, would like to relocate to Australia on PR

Posted by charles herman on May 24, 2025 at 7:05 am

I am graduate in law, but worked mainly as social worker in Sweden (14 years+ with diability work, both as support worker and as team manager, correctional officer and child care worker, age group 12-18). I have attended all the necessary trainnings and certifications required for that in Sweden. I have visited Australia (Sydney and Melbourne) twice and really liked it there.

I am looking for any possibility to sponsorship to move permanently and work in Australia and I am ready to consider opportunities in any territory.

    Any tips?

On the side, I am passionate with IT and hold a Certified Cisco Network Associate Certification and an Amazon Solution Architect Professional Certification.

Hi Charles, and welcome to Oz Visa Forum 🙂

Thanks for sharing your background as this is very useful context.

Here’s a few pathways/considerations for you to consider.

    Social Work Pathway

Your primary occupation aligns with ANZSCO 272511 – Social Worker, which is listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). This inclusion makes you eligible for several skilled visa options, such as:

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa

Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa

Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme Visa

Subclass 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (Medium-Term Stream)

For a skills assessment, the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the designated authority. They will evaluate your qualifications and experience to determine your eligibility.

    IT Pathway

Your IT certifications also present viable migration options:

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA): This certification aligns with ANZSCO 263111 – Computer Network and Systems Engineer.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional: This certification corresponds to ANZSCO 261313 – Software Engineer.

Both occupations are on the MLTSSL, making you eligible for the same skilled visa options mentioned above. The Australian Computer Society (ACS) is the assessing authority for these IT occupations. They consider both formal qualifications and relevant work experience or certifications.

    Strategic Considerations

Given your extensive experience in social work, pursuing migration through the Social Worker pathway might be more straightforward. However, your IT certifications could enhance your profile, especially if you have relevant work experience in IT. It’s essential to consider which pathway aligns best with your professional background and future career aspirations.

    Job Search Resources

To explore job opportunities that offer visa sponsorship in Australia, consider the following platforms:

    1. https://482jobs.com – This is one of our own websites, and all jobs listed here offer Australia Visa Sponsorship.

    2. https://seek.com.au

    3. https://indeed.com.au

Seek and indeed will require additional filtering as both sponsored and non sponsored roles are advertised.

    Next Steps

    1. Determine which occupation (Social Worker or IT professional) best reflects your experience and qualifications.
    2. Undergo a skills assessment with the relevant authority (AASW for Social Worker or ACS for IT occupations).
    3. Once you have a positive skills assessment, you can proceed with the visa application process.

I hope this information helps you in planning your move to Australia. If you have further questions or need assistance with any step of the process, feel free to ask.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. 🙂

    Warm regards,

    Mark
