  • Veterinarian subclass 186 vs Subclass 407 Sponsorship

Posted by Adam on March 3, 2025 at 4:29 pm

I’ve completed a professional assessment as a veterinarian and have over a decade of experience in this industry.

Additionally, I possess a sufficient PTE score that qualifies me to apply for the 186 visa. Recently, I have received a job offer from an employer who is willing to sponsor me for a 407 visa in the same field.

As I am currently located outside Australia, can I directly request that my employer consider providing sponsorship for the 186 visa instead?

Please note that all my recognized professional experience has been gained outside of Australia.

    Cheers

    Adam

    Hi Adam and welcome!

Yes, you can definitely ask your employer to consider sponsoring you for the Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) visa instead of the Subclass 407 (Training) visa.

Since you have over a decade of experience and have completed your skills assessment, you may be eligible for the 186 visa under the Direct Entry stream, provided you meet all other requirements.

However, your employer must be willing to sponsor you for the 186 visa, which has stricter criteria than the 407 visa, including:

    • Being an approved standard business sponsor
    • Demonstrating a genuine need for a full-time, permanent employee in your occupation
    • Meeting salary and labour market testing requirements

Since your work experience has been gained outside Australia, ensure that your skills assessment is valid for the 186 visa (as some assessments differ for different visa subclasses).

If your employer is hesitant about committing to permanent sponsorship, you could propose a 407 visa as a pathway to a 186 visa later, giving them time to assess your work before offering long-term sponsorship.

I’d recommend having an open discussion with your employer about both options and their long-term hiring goals.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your visa process! Let us know how you get on. ☺️

    Regards,

    Mark
