Current visa processing times
As of May 2025, the current Processing Times for the 482 visa are:
Specialist Skills stream: Median processing time is 7 business days for decision-ready applications.
Core Skills stream: Median processing time is 21 business days for decision-ready applications.
These times apply to applications that are complete and include all necessary documents, such as health and character checks and any required skills assessments.
Post-Payment 482 Visa Process:
After paying the visa application fee, your application enters the assessment phase. The Department of Home Affairs evaluates your application based on the information and documents provided. To avoid delays, ensure that:
- All required documents are submitted promptly.
- You respond quickly to any additional information requests.
- Health examinations and police clearances are completed as needed.
I hope this clarifies the process for you. If you have further questions, feel free to ask!

Thank you for responding.
If l may ask, what’s the difference between SPECIALIST SKILLS STREAM & CORE SKILLS STREAM?

Hi Vimbayi,
Great follow-up question and apologies, I should have expanded on that a little!
The Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) offers two main streams: the Specialist Skills Stream and the Core Skills Stream. Here’s a breakdown of their key differences:
Specialist Skills Stream:
Eligibility: Open to applicants in ANZSCO Major Groups 1, 2, 4, 5, or 6, which include managers, professionals, and clerical and administrative workers.
Salary Threshold: Minimum annual salary of AUD $135,000.
Occupation List: No specific occupation list; however, certain occupations like trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers are excluded.
Work Experience: At least 1 year of full-time relevant work experience in the last 5 years.
Visa Duration: Up to 4 years.
Processing Time: Median processing time is 7 business days for decision-ready applications.
Permanent Residency Pathway: Eligible for transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) after 2 years.
Core Skills Stream:
Eligibility: For occupations listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), covering various industries such as healthcare, construction, and hospitality.
Salary Threshold: Minimum annual salary of AUD $73,150.
Work Experience: At least 1 year of full-time relevant work experience in the last 5 years.
Visa Duration: Up to 4 years.
Processing Time: Median processing time is 21 business days for decision-ready applications.
Permanent Residency Pathway: Eligible for transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) after 2 years.
In summary, the Specialist Skills Stream is tailored for high-income earners in specific managerial and professional roles, while the Core Skills Stream caters to a broader range of occupations with a lower salary threshold.
I hope this clarifies the differences between the two streams. If you’d like to share a little more about your occupation and background we can dig into timelines and occupation streams better aligned with your personal circumstances. 🙂
Best regards,
Mark
