Hi Jake, thanks for your post and welcome to our community 🤗

With your background there are a few potential pathways to Australian residency, especially via employer sponsorship or skilled migration.

    1. Employer Sponsored Visas Based on your ICT and cybersecurity experience, these ANZSCO codes are worth exploring:

    261112 Systems Analyst

    262112 ICT Security Specialist

263111 Computer Network and Systems Engineer

The ICT Security Specialist (ANZSCO 262112) is on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), which makes you eligible for both temporary and permanent visa options.

    Visa options:

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) VisaSubclass 482: A popular pathway for sponsored employment. This visa can lead to permanent residency after 2–3 years depending on the stream.

Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)Subclass 186: Direct PR option if you’re nominated by an employer and meet eligibility.

Skilled Independent (subclass 189) or Skilled Nominated (subclass 190): Based on a points test. You may be eligible if your occupation is on the MLTSSL and you pass a skills assessment.

    2. Where to Find Sponsored Jobs To find jobs that offer sponsorship:

    1. https://482jobs.com – This is one of our own websites, and all jobs listed here offer Australian visa sponsorship. The ICT job category may be suitable for you: https://482jobs.com/job-category/information-communications-technology/

    2. https://seek.com.au

    3. https://indeed.com.au

The latter two websites list both sponsored and none sponsored roles so some filtering will be required (add sponsorship as part of your search criteria).

    Next Steps

Consider doing a skills assessment through ACS (Australian Computer Society): https://www.acs.org.au

Start applying for jobs that offer sponsorship, and upload your resume to https://482jobs.com/candidates/submit-resume/ to get noticed by recruiters.

You might also benefit from formatting your resume and LinkedIn profile to Australian standards. Here’s a helpful article: https://482jobs.com/australia-resume-tips-craft-winning-resume/

Finally. I recommend reviewing some of the posts by our community member @tommy as he is also from the US and works in a similar industry. He’s also recently received an invitation to apply so is a little way ahead of you from a process perspective so his experiences might be useful. You can check out some of his posts here.

That’s a lot of info but I hope this gives you a clear starting point, Jake! 🙂

Let me know if you’d like help with anything else.

    Regards

Thanks mate and you are correct about the initial redirection. The intent is to make the dashboard page a little more accessible as clicking on our website logo now takes you to this location when you are logged in. The benefit of a personal ‘homepage’ is it’s customised for the user so hopefully it should be much more helpful then our generic website homepage when logged in. 👍🏻

    Hi Aliya,

Thanks for the update, and no worries at all, life gets busy! 🙂

Sorry to hear your EOI was cancelled. That can happen if it’s been active for 12 months without being updated or selected. It’s good that your agency plans to resubmit it, but this might also be a good opportunity to reassess your approach.

You mentioned they selected Financial Adviser as your nominated occupation. This aligns with ANZSCO 222311 – Financial Investment Adviser, which is currently on the STSOL (Short-term Skilled Occupation List). This means it is not eligible for the Subclass 189 (Independent) visa, but can be considered for:

Subclass 190 (State Nominated) – depending on state demand and eligibility

Subclass 491 (Regional Nominated) – often with more flexibility

Here’s what you can do from your end:

    1. Check your EOI points score – If you’re under 65 points, you won’t be eligible for a visa invitation. You may be able to increase your score by improving your English test results or claiming more points for work experience.

    2. Ask your agent if they’ve applied for any state nominations on your behalf, especially under Subclass 190 or 491. Some states occasionally invite Financial Advisers depending on demand.

    3. Confirm your skill assessment outcome. Was it completed by the Financial Adviser assessing body, such as the Financial Adviser Standards body (FASEA) or another authority?

    4. Stay proactive – Even if your agency is managing the process, it’s important to be aware of key dates and updates.

I’m happy to help you explore which states might consider nominating Financial Advisers if you’d like to share your EOI points and other details.

I hope this gives some clarity, and I’m here to help if you need more support.

Thanks so much for the update, Paul—that’s really helpful!

As a Licensed Electrical Mechanic, your occupation would typically align with ANZSCO 341111 – Electrician (General).

This role is currently listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), which is great news—it means there are several skilled visa pathways available for you.

Given your background, here are some potential options to consider:

    1. Employer Sponsored Visas

The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa – subclass 482 could be a great pathway if you secure a job offer with sponsorship.

You can start your search at https://482jobs.com – this is one of our own websites and all jobs listed here offer Australian visa sponsorship.

Since you’re in a trade, the direct link to relevant jobs is: https://482jobs.com/job-category/trades-services/

    Also try:

    https://seek.com.au

    https://indeed.com.au

For the latter two sites you’ll need to filter for sponsored roles as they list both sponsored and non sponsored positions.

Uploading your resume to 482 Jobs is another great step as we have Australian recruiters that that use our database to identify potential candidates. https://482jobs.com/candidates/submit-resume/

    2. Skilled Migration Visas

You may also be eligible for permanent skilled visas like the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) or Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) if you meet points requirements and complete a positive skills assessment through Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) – website: https://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au

    3. PNG Citizen Stream – Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV)

As a Papua New Guinea citizen, another possible option could be the new Pacific Engagement Visa (subclass 192).

This visa is designed for citizens from the Pacific and Timor-Leste, offering permanent residency through a ballot system.

You can read more on the official site here: https://www.dfat.gov.au/geo/pacific/people-connections/people-connections-in-the-pacific/pacific-engagement-visa

Your experience with reputable Australian companies like Downer, Monadelphous, and McConnell Dowell is a big plus.

That background may make it easier to connect with Australian employers who are already familiar with your work environment.

Let me know if you’d like help with the skills assessment process or if you’re interested in the PEV and want to know how the ballot works.

Hope this gives you a good starting point, Paul. Happy to help further anytime!

    Cheers,

April 18, 2025 at 10:44 pm in reply to: Skill assessment

Hi Mehboob, and thanks for your question! 🙂

As a plumber, your skills assessment is conducted by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).

You’ll need to complete the Offshore Skills Assessment (OSAP) if you’re applying from outside Australia and seeking a skilled visa like the 482 Temporary Skill Shortage visa or 189/190/491 skilled visas.

    Here’s how the process works:

    1. Check eligibility: The ANZSCO code for Plumber is 334111, and it is currently on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List).

This means you are eligible for skilled visa options like 189, 190, 491, and employer-sponsored visas like the 482.

    2. Assessment steps:

Stage 1: Documentary Evidence Assessment You must submit evidence of:

Your plumbing qualification (translated into English)

At least 3–4 years of full-time work experience, including at least 12 months within the last 3 years

Proof of employment like payslips, reference letters, tax documents, etc.

Stage 2: Technical Interview and/or Practical Assessment If your documents are approved, you’ll be invited to a technical interview or practical assessment to demonstrate your skills.

    3. Assessment body: You will need to go through a TRA-approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for your specific country. A popular one is RTOs like VETASSESS or ASI Solutions. They will give you the full list of documents needed.

    TRA website: https://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au

To help find visa-sponsored plumbing jobs, try:

    1. https://482jobs.com – This is one of our own websites and all jobs listed here offer Australia visa sponsorship. The job category for you might be useful: https://482jobs.com/job-category/trades-services/
    2. https://seek.com.au
    3. https://indeed.com.au

You should also upload your resume to 482jobs so recruiters in Australia can find you: https://482jobs.com/candidates/submit-resume/

Hope that helps get you started.

Feel free to ask if you need any further help.

    Hi Aneesh,

Thanks for your post. I’ve moved your question to its own thread to keep things nice and tidy—it’s always better to start your own post when asking a new question, especially if it’s different from the original topic.

This way, we can provide you with more tailored help and others can find the information more easily too. 👍🏻

Regarding your interest in the 482 visa (Temporary Skill Shortage visa), your visa options are directly linked to your occupation.

Each occupation is assigned an ANZSCO code (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations), and depending on which list that occupation appears on—the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List), STSOL (Short-term Skilled Occupation List), or ROL (Regional Occupation List)—different visa options and pathways may apply.

To give you the best advice, we’ll need more details about your background. Could you please share:

    1. Your current occupation and work experience
    2. Any qualifications or certifications you hold
    3. Whether you’ve completed any skills assessments or English tests

Once we have this, we can guide you more precisely on job search tips and the most suitable migration pathway.

Looking forward to hearing more so we can help you move forward.

G’day Paul, and welcome to our community! Thanks for introducing yourself. 🙂

You’re absolutely right. There are many opportunities in Australia’s job market, especially in areas like maintenance, construction, and trades.

Your specific occupation will play a big role in your visa options, so it would help to know exactly what trade or type of maintenance work you do.

For example, different trades such as electrician, plumber, or fitter each have their own ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) codes, which influence visa eligibility and sponsorship pathways.

Once I know your exact occupation, I can guide you on:

Whether it’s currently in demand in Australia

The best visa pathways available (like employer sponsorship or skilled migration)

What qualifications or licensing you may need to meet Australian standards

Looking forward to hearing more about your experience so I can give tailored advice.

    Cheers,

    Hi Kudakwashe,

Thanks for your message and great job on getting your VETASSESS skills assessment done for Mobile Plant Technology as that’s an important first step.

Your occupation, Mobile Plant Technician (ANZSCO 321212), is currently listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). This is great news, as it means you’re eligible to be sponsored for a Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 visa under the medium-term stream, which offers a pathway to permanent residency after 3 years.

To find employers who offer visa sponsorship:

    1. https://482jobs.com – This is one of our own websites and all jobs listed here offer Australia visa sponsorship. Your job category is listed under Trades & Services here: https://482jobs.com/job-category/trades-services/

    2. https://seek.com.au

    3. https://indeed.com.au

For seek and indeed you will need to filter your search as these sites post non sponsored roles also.

    Hi Louis,

Thanks for sharing your background—you’re in a great position to pursue skilled migration to Australia!

As a Fitter and Turner, your occupation is classified under ANZSCO 323212, and it’s currently listed on both the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Regional Occupation List (ROL).

This opens up a number of visa pathways for you, including:

    • Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage visa) – Short-term entry with employer sponsorship.

    • Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) – Direct permanent residency pathway through employer sponsorship.

    • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional visa) – Points-tested and often requires regional nomination.

    • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated visa) – Points-tested with state nomination.

Since you’re seeking sponsorship, I recommend starting with the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa. You already have your VETASSESS skills assessment and PTE Academic, so you’re well-prepared.

    1. https://482jobs.com – Fitter roles are likely listed in: https://482jobs.com/job-category/trades-services/ – This is one of our websites, and all roles listed here offer visa sponsorship.
