Recent data shows that Australia is returning to a normal demographic pattern after the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Innes Willox, Chief Executive of the Australian Industry Group, has highlighted the necessity of a skills-focused migration program to meet workforce needs.

The Pandemic’s Effects

During the initial two years of the pandemic, migration and population growth in Australia came to a standstill due to closed borders. However, as restrictions eased, both migration and economic activity saw a significant rebound.

By early 2025, Australia’s resident population reached approximately 27.5 million, reflecting a mere 0.27% increase from what long-term trends suggested. Willox notes that this figure should inform discussions about Australia’s migration strategies.

Housing and Infrastructure Concerns

Concerns remain regarding the availability of housing and public infrastructure to support the growing population. Decreased rates of home building and delays in infrastructure projects have raised worries. Willox clarified that the core issue is the supply of housing and infrastructure, rather than population growth itself. The current trajectory mirrors patterns Australia has experienced over the past decade.

The Role of Skilled Migration

Limiting migration could worsen the issues surrounding infrastructure development. Skilled migrants play a crucial role in filling gaps within the workforce, particularly in construction and industrial roles. Professions such as electricians, carpenters, plumbers, and construction managers are officially recognised as being in short supply. Without these skilled workers, increasing building rates is quite challenging.

Willox argues that a robust Australian migration program is essential to attract individuals with the skills necessary to address the nation’s infrastructural needs. By emphasising skilled migration, Australia can effectively tackle the workforce shortages that hinder ongoing building efforts.
