Picture this: about 850,000 students settled in Australia, a number just as dazzling as the local beaches. If rates continue as they are, you can bet that appeals will be as common as kangaroos at dusk.

Take a deep breath, because the stats are staggering. Appeals against student cancellations climbed up to 893, while the general migration backlog skyrocketed to an astonishing 46,371. The cherry on this topsy-turvy cake? When you throw asylum applications into the mix, the total backlog could hit the 100,000 mark. With all these figures, it becomes clear that the government’s plan to speed up departures, in order to manage net migration, may very well be wishful thinking. Departures may increase, but unless the system gets a proper revamp, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll match the ambitious forecasts.

The real question now is how the new Labor Government will tackle this conundrum. A knee-jerk reaction, such as slapping on increased visa fees or capping student numbers, isn’t the way forward.
