Recent Changes in Australia’s Vocational Education Sector

In a significant move, the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has clamped down on several vocational colleges, finding that they did not meet the required quality standards for education. Approximately 23,000 students have had their diplomas invalidated, specifically those issued between 2023 and 2025. Alarmingly, when given a chance to verify their credentials, none of the affected students succeeded in proving their legitimacy.

Government Response

To tackle these issues, the Australian government has committed AU$4.7 million (approximately US$3 million) for the years 2025–2026 to strengthen ASQA’s enforcement efforts. Currently, ASQA is investigating 189 cases across 154 schools, with over half of these involving international students.

According to the Department of Education, around 263,000 international vocational students are currently enrolled in courses across Australia.
